St Elias Specialty Hospital-The First of Its Kind in Alaska

St. Elias Specialty Hospital is Alaska’s first Long Term Acute Care Hospital (LTACH/LTCH). We are accredited by The Joint Commisssion. We are Medicare-certified and the only hospital of its kind in Alaska.

St. Elias Specialty Hospital is a joint venture with Providence Health System and BridgeCare Hospitals. The hospital has 60 beds, the majority private rooms.  The facility features state of the art equipment to provide extended inpatient acute care for patients.

At St. Elias Specialty Hospital, we provide customized, physician-driven programs for patients requiring longer stays in an acute care environment due to multiple or complex medical conditions. We are not a permanent placement for patients; rather we are an answer for many patients who are acutely ill and need to take the first steps towards rehabilitation.

Most of our patients are admitted from a traditional acute care hospital, often from the Intensive Care Unit. We have also admitted directly from skilled nursing facilities and physicians' offices. Families of patients are welcome to contact us to see if we might be an option for their loved one.

Alaska Run for Women

St. Elias Hospital is a proud Platinum Sponsor for the Alaska Run for Women.

"The St. Elias Sisters" participated in the run on Saturday June, 11. The mission of the run was "To raise money for and awareness of breast cancer and women's health, and to showcase the talents of Alaska's women athletes."

St. Elias was a Gold Sponsor of the 2011 Relay for Life in May. Our very own Beth Rhoden was the chairperson of the event. It was a record year for the event in Anchorage. Congratulations to Beth and the St.Elias Relay for Life Team. We honor the 11 million Americans who have survived cancer!  www.akrfw.org

The Flu and You

Flu season has arrived and St. Elias is currently in the process of vaccinating it’s staff against the flu virus. Our Flu campaign this year is entitled, “Who will you protect?”.

Being safe from the flu is as simple as 1-2-3. First, make sure to get vaccinated. Second, take everyday preventative actions to protect yourself such as hand washing and covering your mouth when you sneeze. Third, if you feel sick, be sure to call you doctor. There are antiviral drugs that may reduce your symptoms or protect you from a long illness.

Last year, 85% of St. Elias employees chose to be vaccinated. Our staff is committed to keeping patients and their loved ones safe from the effects of the flu. For more information visit www.flu.gov

St. Elias News...

Freezing for a Reason!

About 30 members of St. Elias Staff jumped into the icy waters of Goose Lake Saturday December 17, 2011. This was the 3rd annual “Freezing for a Reason” event put on by Special Olympics Alaska. The day is all about having fun and doing the right thing for people with intellectual disabilities.

St. Elias charge nurse, Caroline Clark organized the event and the team included St. Elias infection control nurse and Mrs. Alaska Brandy Wendler. Katie Lovegreen, Miss Alaska America and State Senator Lesil McGuire were recruited to jump with the team. The St. Elias team was top fundraisers for the event that raised nearly $400,000 for Special Olympic athletes. There were no complaints about the cold water from the St. Elias jumpers. The group said they were all “proud to play”.

About St Elias Specialty Hospital

doctor-group

St. Elias is located in the heart of Anchorage Alaska, but we have welcomed patients from all over the United States. St. Elias is the first and only LTCH in the state. The terms "Long Term Acute Care Hospital" (LTACH) and "Long Term Care Hospital" ( LTCH) refer to the same type of hospital. The acronyms are used interchangeably. Both terms distinguish us from a traditional acute care hospital. LTCH's are not intended to be a permanent placement. Our goal is to help the patient reach his/ her highest level of wellness possible and move up the health care continuum. For many LTCH patients, this means home.
